Health classes explained
Categories explained: Preferred Plus, Preferred, Standard Plus, and Standard—what each tier represents and how you move between them.
Term insurance premiums depend on underwriting classification. Labels differ between providers, but the structure remains: Preferred Plus (sometimes Ultra Preferred or Preferred Best), Preferred, Standard Plus, and Standard, plus extra charges for greater risk. Smokers occupy their own higher-cost classification tiers.
What underwriters look at
BMI and body composition, cholesterol and BP readings, family health background (heart disease or cancer prior to age 60), traffic citations, medication records, job type and interests, and smoking/nicotine intake. Achieving the best classification requires strong outcomes on essentially everything; Preferred tolerates some deviation; Standard Plus and Standard accept managed illnesses like blood pressure under medication.
How to use the quote tool
Health questions ask for honest self-assessment: Excellent aligns with Preferred Plus, Very good with Preferred, Good with Standard Plus, and Average with Standard. Quotes reflect this assignment; carriers ultimately verify after you apply. When unsure, get quotes for both tiers and compare; the application determines your actual class. Overestimating your health won't reduce what you eventually pay—it just makes the estimate less realistic.
Our agency helps compare carriers that rate your specific circumstances more favorably—this often influences your cost more than the advertised base rate.
